Pillsbury Goes Gluten-Free… But Not in Canada

Yesterday, Pillsbury announced that they’re releasing three gluten-free products: pie/pastry crust, pizza dough, and chocolate chip cookie dough. You’ll start seeing these products in grocery stores in May, and they will become widely available by August.

gluten-free-thin-crust-pizza-doughSadly, these products won’t be coming to Canada at all. I e-mailed the company this morning and received this reply:

“Thank you for contacting the General Mills Consumer Services Department. At this time, the Pillsbury product you contacted us about is sold only in the United States. We appreciate your loyalty to General Mills products and will share your interest with the appropriate individuals.”

However, General Mills said the same thing about Chex and Kellogg Canada said the same thing about gluten-free Rice Krispies – two products that are available here in Canada now. A big factor in the change was likely consumer response. I was so bummed when I found out they weren’t coming to Canada! It would be nice to have a few more options… I sent in feedback and am getting a girl I work with that has celiac to do the same… My Mom, mother-in-law, grandmother, father, and fiance are doing the same, just to help us out… More voices may help!

Unfortunately, it’s often the way with new gluten free products. However, lots of consumer responses usually helps, so I am very glad you’re rallying the troops! :) And, if nothing else, it’s a good excuse for a trip to Maine to do some shopping. :P Groceries don’t count towards your duty limit!

Does anyone know of any other gluten-free pie crust? I need to make a gluten-free crust and don’t have the time (or skill, or patience…) to make my own. Any tips would be MUCH appreciated.

Kinnikinnick makes a pretty good one and their products are carried in most grocery stores. In Nova Scotia, Schoolhouse Bakery makes an excellent crust too, so I’d check with any gluten-free bakers in your area. Good luck!

That is ironic! I am really hoping that they bring both products north of the border soon. :)

Please bring these proeducts to Canada. I received some for Christmas and they were delicious. I don’t travel to the US so won’t have access until we get them here!
