I’ve visited The Keg (a steakhouse chain) twice since being diagnosed with  Celiac disease and both times have been impressed with the attitude and knowledge of the servers and the variety of options available.

Steakhouses are usually safe for those following a gluten-free diet. The restaurant should be able to, at the very least, prepare a basic steak and baked potato that is gluten-free and contamination-free. Be sure to ask the server if they add any seasonings, rubs, or marinades to their steaks as many steakhouses do, and they often contain gluten.

The Keg is heaven for meat-eating Celiacs. At both the Halifax and Moncton locations, I asked the server what they would recommend for me, and their suggestion was for me to choose what I wanted and they would modify it to make it gluten-free if at all possible. That phrase is always music to my ears!

On both occasions, I chose a steak for my entree. The first time I had their Filet Mignon with a twice-baked potato, and had no issues. The second time I decided to try the Top Sirloin with teriyaki sauce. However, the sauce (not surprisingly) wasn’t gluten free, so I asked for a side of blue cheese instead. I received a perfectly cooked steak with a mountain of blue cheese on top, and was only charged $1.00 for the substitution. Once again, I had no after-effects.

My only disappointment was that their Caesar salad dressing is not gluten free. Some places will make a Caesar salad with no croutons and a gluten free dressing for Celiac clients, but not The Keg. Too bad, because it looked really delicious.

If you’re looking for a casual, fun place that you can take your friends or family and enjoy a delicious gluten-free meal, The Keg is the place to go.
