There has been a lot of talk about the New England Journal of Medicine’s article about which foods are best and worst for weight loss. Yogurt was found to be the best food for weight loss. Since many people with Celiac disease have trouble with weight maintenance, this is good news!
Yogurt is also great for Celiacs because:
- It is usually gluten-free
- It contains probiotics, which are helpful to maintaining a healthy gut
- It comes in many flavours and varieties, which is nice since a lot of the time our options are limited
When you’re purchasing yogurt, always read the ingredients to make sure that it really is gluten-free. As well, stick with brands that have fruit and skim milk near the top of the ingredients list. Watch out for flavours that are mostly cream and/or sugar.
If you don’t like the taste of yogurt, try creating a smoothie. Blend 1/2 cup yogurt, 1/2 cup milk, 2 cups fresh fruit, and 1/2 cup ice for a yummy treat! Or, substitute plain yogurt for sour cream in recipes.
