New Tests Question Gluten-Free Beer

A test has finally been developed to accurately measure gluten levels in malted beverages, like beer and coolers. Many companies (including the American version of Mike’s Hard coolers) claim that the brewing process eliminates gluten from their product. A new test on eight gluten-free beers showed that only two were actually gluten-free.

You state above that “A new test on 60 gluten-free beers showed that only two were actually gluten-free.”

This is inaccurate. The test was done on 60 gluten-containing commercial beers. Only 8 gluten-free beers were analyzed and it was discovered that 2 of those 8 contained as much gluten as regular beer.

From the linked article, “They used this test to analyze 60 commercial beers and found that many of the regular brands contained significant levels of hordein.

Eight brands labeled ‘gluten-free’ did not contain hordein. However, the researchers were surprised to discover that two of the brands labeled ‘gluten-free’ actually had about as much hordein as regular beer.”

Thanks for the correction Michael – I totally misread the article. We have corrected the post!
