Gluten-Free Eating is Great in Calgary!

I always find it exciting to visit a new city and see how gluten-friendly they are. We just returned from a trip to Calgary and we had a ton of great experiences there. Here are some of the highlights.

  • Food trucks are a big craze right now, and Calgary has a gluten-free one! Fries and Dolls offers gluten-free gourmet French fries as well as gluten-free sausages. I didn’t have a chance to check them out myself but I’ve heard they are fantastic!
  • There are many gluten-free bakeries and cafes in town. One that is about to open is Heaven on 17th Avenue. Looks delicious!
  • We also found a great Irish pub with gluten-free options. Jamesons has three locations in Calgary. We visited the 17th Avenue location and I was treated to amazing gluten-free pizza with Italian meats.
  • My favorite place was the Craft Beer Market on 10th Avenue SW. Their food menu features gluten-free flatbreads, pastas, burgers, wraps, and sandwiches. As well, their beer list includes five gluten-free beers.  I tried the elusive Estrella Damm Daura from Spain, Mongozo draft, and New Grist. They also offer Bard’s and La Messagere. (Check out the list on this page.)

The only unfortunate part of our trip was that we didn’t have time to check out more places! We’re looking forward to going back soon and finding more great gluten-free dining.

Great review of things in Calgary. Funny you mention the Estrella Damm Daura–I just got back from Fire Island, NY (Cherry Grove, to be precise), and when I went to the bar and asked what GF beers they had, they just had one–the Daura. They’d bought it because they wanted to bring in a GF beer, and had heard it was “the best.” Well, they were pretty much spot on…I thought it was terrific, pretty much indistinguishable from a regular beer. I’ve also had many Mongozos (the local LC here in Liverpool used to carry it), and that’s an excellent pilsner as well.

It’s a shame that Halifax is still relatively behind the curve on GF offerings compared to the larger metropoli. Edmonton is very similar to Calgary in its plethora of GF offerings.

I actually noticed the regular, non-GF Estrella Damm at the NSLC yesterday, so I’ve e-mailed to see if they will bring in the GF version. Will let you know if they say yes!

So far, no luck getting it here in Nova Scotia… but the category manager for beer has been made aware of the request. If you’re interested in the beer too, fill out the form at and maybe we can get some action!
