Earlier this month, we finally had a chance to visit jane’s on the common for brunch with Michael’s brother. Things didn’t start out so well as the four of us waited outside for almost an hour on a blustery Sunday for a table. It’s par for the course, however, with jane’s being so small and having a big following!
When we finally got inside, the first order of the day was to order drinks. Two members in our party ordered the organic Bloody Mary ($8) while I had a mimosa ($6). (Michael was driving and stuck to coffee.) It’s worthwhile noting that their Bloody Mary is gluten-free and doesn’t include Worcestershire sauce!
We were all pretty hungry, too, so we reviewed the one-page menu pretty quickly. Gluten-free options were clearly marked on it, which made things much easier for me. I was a bit disappointed to see that the menu we had differed from the one on the website, the biggest change being that the Eggs Benedict were no longer a gluten-free option. That left the lobster frittata and a sausage and potato scramble.
I asked our waitress if the scramble could be made with bacon, and when she said yes, I decided on that. (To make the dish gluten-free, they simply don’t serve the sourdough toast with it.) Michael ordered the Eggs Benedict with bacon, Jeremy got the sausage and potato scramble, and Dave ordered the lobster frittata.
We enjoyed our drinks and people-watched as we waited for our meals, which didn’t take that long considering the crowd in the restaurant. I was really impressed by the modified scramble. It was hearty and delicious, with fresh, amazing ingredients, and everything was perfectly cooked. Everyone else’s meals were just as enjoyable, and we were all full by the end.
Although I enjoyed the scramble, two gluten-free options (out of eight) just aren’t enough for a brunch menu. The current website menu shows four options out of eight, which is a much better ratio. However, their menu does change frequently based on the seasons, and whatever you order is sure to be delicious and memorable.
