Another Burger Place to Krave!

For several months, Halifax has been waiting for Krave Burger, its newest gourmet burger joint, to open its doors. Last month, they released a sneak peek of their menu. It included an icon for many gluten-free options, including French fries. We all know what that usually means: cross-contaminated and not suitable for Celiacs.

Still, I was curious, so I tweeted them to ask if they would have a dedicated fryer. Their response was amazing:

We couldn’t ask for much more than that!

Celiacs are Welcome at Burger Week!

The second annual Halifax Burger Week is upon us! With over 50 restaurants in this year’s lineup, Celiacs have a number of options to choose from.

The first two entries that stand out are from Heartwood and enVie. We haven’t reviewed either restaurant, but both list a gluten-free bun option right in their Burger Week entry!

There are also some amazing places that we’ve reviewed on the list.

  • We’ve confirmed that both locations of Finbar’s can make their lamb burger gluten-free.
  • The chef at Jamieson’s Irish House & Grill has Celiac disease, and we’ve always found them extremely accommodating.
  • Both Relish and Flipburger offer tons of gluten-free options. The French fries at Flipburger are gluten-free, too!
  • Rock Bottom Brewpub has one of the best burgers in town, and I’m sure their Burger Week offering will be amazing too.
  • 2 Doors Down is one of our favourite spots in the city. We’re not sure if their Burger Week sliders will be gluten-free, but their Old School Cheeseburger (off the regular menu) is fantastic!

Another burger that we’d like to try is the one from Darrell’s. We’ve heard amazing things about their gluten-free options, but we haven’t made it there yet.

Let us know what you’re trying for Burger Week!

Estia Offers Lots of Gluten-Free Options, But Inconsistent Food

Several weeks ago, we finally got a chance to try Estia, a Greek restaurant on Spring Garden Road. Although we arrived right around suppertime on a Saturday night, there were lots of empty tables and we were seated right away. (It took much longer for a server to arrive and give us menus, however.) After ordering drinks, I asked for the gluten-free menu. It’s basically a copy of the regular menu with items marked “GF” as appropriate. There are also a few sections (such as the pastas and sandwiches) that are completely different. Everything in those sections is gluten-free, so items are not individually marked. I found this a bit confusing, to be honest. In fact, the menu overall confused me. There were many items that sounded delicious but not very Greek, like the Philly Cheesesteak wrap, Chicken Parmigiana panini, and veal scallopine.

While we were pondering the menu options, our waitress brought by gluten-free bread for me and regular bread for Mike, as well as separate dipping plates with oil and vinegar.

Rockbottom Brewpub is Topnotch

Last Friday, we decided it was time to try something new, so when suppertime came, we headed into town to the Rockbottom Brewpub. (It’s located on Spring Garden Road, below Your Father’s Moustache.) We walked in and first impressions weren’t great: no tables were available, the front half of the room was crazy bright, and no one came to greet us. However, earlier that day Michael had noticed extremely tiny print on their website promising gluten-free sandwiches, pasta, and pizza, so I really wanted to give it a shot. We took a seat at the bar and ordered some drinks.

Gluten-free at Saege | The Feed

Saege Bistro has a new menu out that’s quite gluten-friendly! The Coast has an article outlining the options called “Gluten-free at Saege.” We’ll try to get there in the coming weeks to review it!

A Good Niche for Celiacs

I haven’t been posting very many reviews lately, and that’s because Mike and I are working on buying our first house, and sticking close to home to save money! However, we did venture out to Niche a few weeks ago. Located at the corner of Barrington and Spring Garden (in the basement of the Maritime Building), it’s not a place that we go very often. However, they do have a nice atmosphere, excellent drinks, reasonably priced food, and jazz music on the weekends. We figured that it was a good spot to grab a bite to eat on Friday night.
