Another Burger Place to Krave!
Posted by glutenfree4hfx in Reviews on September 14, 2014
For several months, Halifax has been waiting for Krave Burger, its newest gourmet burger joint, to open its doors. Last month, they released a sneak peek of their menu. It included an icon for many gluten-free options, including French fries. We all know what that usually means: cross-contaminated and not suitable for Celiacs.
Still, I was curious, so I tweeted them to ask if they would have a dedicated fryer. Their response was amazing:
We couldn’t ask for much more than that!
What’s For Dinner? Oven-Baked Fish and Chips!
Posted by glutenfree4hfx in What's For Dinner on August 10, 2014
Why We Love It
Fish and chips is a classic Maritime dish, especially in the summer. This version is a bit lighter since it’s done entirely in the oven. The recipe below makes enough fish and chips for two people, but can easily be scaled for a larger group.
Ingredients – Chips
- Three large Yukon or Russet potatoes
- Slightly more than 1 tbsp. vinegar
- 2 tsp. table salt
- 1 tbsp. canola oil
- Sea salt to taste
Ingredients – Fish
- Two fish fillets (any white fish will do, such as cod, haddock, or tilapia)
- About ¼ cup Miracle Whip or mayonnaise
- 1 cup gluten-free kettle chips, salt and vinegar flavour
Method
- Preheat oven to 450°F.
- Fill a large pot with water, 2 tsp. table salt, and slightly more than 1 tbsp. vinegar. Bring to a boil.
- While water is coming to a boil, cut potatoes into French fry shapes (stick about half an inch thick, or however you like them).
- Once water is boiling, place potatoes in pot and boil for 10 minutes.
- After 10 minutes, drain potatoes well using a strainer or colander. (Be careful because they will be fragile.) Then, carefully place them in a bowl, toss with the canola oil, and season with salt.
- Place potatoes on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or non-stick foil. Place sheet into oven and set a timer for 13 minutes.
- Meanwhile, place potato chips in a Ziploc baggie and smash them up with a rolling pin or mallet.
- Brush fish with the Miracle Whip and then press crushed chips onto the sauce. Carefully place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or non-stick foil.
- Once the oven timer goes off, turn the French fries over. Put the fish into the oven at the same time.
- Bake both fish and fries for 12 minutes. Season fries with extra salt if desired.
- Serve and enjoy!
Tips
- Be very careful when purchasing the kettle chips. We have seen several brands that include malt vinegar but were labelled gluten-free. We would recommend the Covered Bridge or Kettle brands.
- If you are just making the fries, you can also cook them at 500°F for 20 minutes.
- Thanks to reader Dave for the chip recipe!

Doing Flips for Flipburger!
Posted by glutenfree4hfx in Reviews on December 13, 2013
Over the past few years, Michael and I have been making the rounds of the gourmet burger places that have been popping up all over Metro. (You can see a summary of our finds here.) Last week we finally got a chance to visit Flipburger, which now has locations in downtown Halifax and Clayton Park.
We visited the downtown Halifax location just before a Mooseheads game. Like many other burger places, you order at a counter, have a seat, and then grab your food when your number is called. Although most of the tables were occupied, we didn’t have to wait at the counter at all. The person waiting on us was very knowledgeable about gluten-free options.
Relishing a Burger and a Beer!
Posted by glutenfree4hfx in General Information on December 13, 2012
Last Friday, Michael and I had the chance to check out Relish Gourmet Burgers, located in the old Blockbuster building on Quinpool Road. I knew I was in for a treat when one of the first things I saw was Glutenberg beer and a note on the chalkboard menu saying they offered gluten-free buns!
Chez Yvonne’s is a Cavendish Treat
Posted by glutenfree4hfx in Reviews on August 29, 2012
Michael and I were recently on Prince Edward Island to visit family. We dined with some of them at Chez Yvonne’s, a Cavendish family restaurant. Michael was seriously doubtful that I’d be able to eat there, but I was convinced they would have at least something gluten-free.
We arrived at the restaurant for lunch and were promptly seated by a family member who works there. We ordered drinks and were offered rolls. Our server also asked if I wanted some gluten-free toast, and explained that all their French fries are fried separately from breaded items. We were off to a great start!
