Alexandra’s “Gluten-Free” Pizza Not Safe for Celiacs

A few weeks ago, local pizza chain Alexandra’s joined Twitter (and followed our blog). I got extremely excited about their first tweet:

Tweet from Alexandra's Pizza about gluten-free crust

I immediately tweeted at them asking for more information. They put me in touch with their marketing consultant, who has family members with Celiac and who seemed to really understand my concerns about gluten-containing ingredients and cross-contamination. Her first e-mail gave some information, including the fact that the dough is made off-site to reduce the chance of cross-contamination.

But then something weird happened.

Updates on Our Favourite Places!

We’ve done a lot of reviews over the past 20 months, so we thought it was time for some updates! Here’s some news on a few of the places that we have reviewed.

The Bicycle Thief

The Bicycle Thief has some great new gluten-free options. You can now get gluten-free handmade kettle chips as well as handmade gluten-free corn pasta. (Our original review is here.)

Baton Rouge

We were less than impressed with our first visit to Baton Rouge – you can read about it here. We finally gave it another try a few weeks ago, and it was fantastic. The server was knowledgeable, there were tons of options, and the food was amazing.

The Foggy Goggle

Two years ago, a less-than-enthusiastic waitress at the Foggy Goggle completely cheesed us off. (Read about it here.) We returned for the first time a few weeks ago, and were delighted to have a knowledgeable, pleasant server. The Foggy Goggle does indeed have plenty of gluten-free options, including Foggy Spuds and wings!

The Wooden Monkey

This winter, The Wooden Monkey will be taking over the old MacAskills space in Alderney Landing. We can’t wait to check out the new digs! (You can read our review of the Grafton Street location here.)

Boston Pizza

Boston Pizza has added GlutenWise items to their menu. It features a gluten-free pizza crust, lots of pizza toppings, and gluten-free pasta. Their menu does note that they can’t guarantee that cross-contamination will not occur, however.

daMaurizio

daMaurizio continues to impress me! We went there with family earlier this fall. I enjoyed their prix fixe menu, which they were easily able to adapt and make gluten-free. If you’re looking for a spectacular gluten-free meal, this is the place to go. You can read our original review here.

Closures Abound!

Earlier this fall, we reviewed jane’s on the common. (You can read the review here.) You’d better get your fix in while you can, because they’ll be serving their last meal on December 31, 2012. The downtown location of ela! Greek Taverna (review here) and The Muster Station (review here) are both closed as well.

Satisfying That Pizza Craving

One of the toughest things to find a good gluten-free replacement for is pizza. Over the past few years, I have found a few good substitutes, though, and I thought I’d share my findings.

Obviously, you have two options: make pizza at home or go out. Personally, I like making pizza at home because you have more control and the risk of cross-contamination is far less. Here are the at-home options I’ve tried and how it went.

New Staple in My Freezer!

A friend of mine brought me some Kinnikinnick donuts last night. They need to be kept frozen and can then be microwaved for 10-20 seconds. Frankly, I was skeptical of how they would taste but I figured I would give it a try. (After all, their pizza crusts are a staple in our house – and I am pretty sure that Boston Pizza uses them also!)

Am I ever glad I did!

Boston Pizza Adds More Gluten-Free Toppings To Its Lineup

Mike and I stopped by Boston Pizza yesterday. Now, I already knew that they had gluten-free pizza (see this post), but I was surprised to see that their list of GF toppings has expanded recently. The full list (not available on their website) now includes all toppings except seasoned ground beef, spicy chicken, and roasted corn medley!

Although it is not on their menu, they will also do gluten-free pizza fingers ($7.99).

Great stuff Boston Pizza!

Three Restaurants That Don’t Even Bother

In my hunt for gluten-free food, I have come across a few places that don’t even bother trying to be gluten-friendly. Here are the three worst offenders that I’ve encountered.
