New Finds at Costco!

We visited Costco Bayers Lake for a change this weekend and picked up a couple of great certified gluten-free finds that we wanted to share with you.

The first item was a two-pack of Essential Baking Company gluten-free bread. We paid $8.99 for two loaves of their Super Seeded Multi-Grain bread. The best part is that each loaf is in its own vacuum-sealed bag, and they don’t have to be frozen (or even refrigerated) until opened, or January 2015!

Costco Eliminating Gluten-Free Products from Nova Scotian Shelves

I’ve posted a few times about the great gluten-free options at our Costco stores in Dartmouth and Halifax, including pizzapastas, crackers, deli meats, and pretzels. Last year, we visited Costco stores in Calgary and Edmonton and saw even more gluten-free options. We were excited, thinking that this meant more gluten-free options were coming our way.

Unfortunately, the opposite is true. The Bayers Lake and Dartmouth Costco stores have stopped selling Breton gluten-free crackers, gluten-free pasta, and even some types of quinoa. Who knows what products will get the axe next. It’s hard to believe that last fall people were told that there would be a gluten-free section in the Bayers Lake Costco!

This is even more disappointing considering that posts that I’ve seen recently on Facebook and Twitter indicate this is not part of Costco’s overall strategy. Some Costco stores in the United States now carry supersized loaves of Udi’s bread. The Costco in Quebec carries Glutenberg beer.

If you’re disappointed in Costco’s decision too, please fill out a comment card the next time you’re at the store and put it in their suggestion box. We’ve been told that this box is emptied and read daily and that the store does listen to suggestions. We’ll keep you up to date with any developments!

Saving Money on Gluten-Free Shopping

Although prices are starting to come down, there’s no denying that gluten-free food is expensive. We’ve got a few tips for helping you save money on gluten-free groceries.

The basics still apply!

Doing some basic preparation like budgeting, meal planning, flyer shopping, and coupon clipping can help you be prepared when you hit the grocery store. We’ve really focused on smart meal planning over the last year and have seen our grocery bill drop by about 30%.

We love the ShopWise app for flyers and keep an eye on BrandSaver and Save.ca for coupons.

Stock up on sales.

When gluten-free items are on sale, stock up if you have the room.  Buying in bulk can also save you money. As well, Costco has started carrying many gluten-free products, including pasta, crackers, and baking mixes.

The Best (And The Rest) of 2013

In 2013, gluten was in the news more than ever. Brands like Pillsbury, Breton, Catelli, and Dempster’s started offering gluten-free items. Even Tim Hortons hopped on the bandwagon with certified gluten-free coconut macaroons! Celiacs also received support from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration with improved labeling and regulations, as well as a new gluten-free certification program from the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness and the Canadian Celiac Association.

To wrap things up, here are some highlights from 2013.

Gluten-Free Pasta Options Are Growing!

A few weeks ago, we posted about the growing number of gluten-free cracker options. We’re seeing the same trend with pasta, too. Even better, the competition seems to be resulting in lower prices!

Here are some of the pastas we’ve seen showing on up store shelves.

If you’re a Costco shopper, their gluten-free pasta section offers some great options:

More Mainstream Options for Gluten-Free Crackers Appearing on Store Shelves

Gluten-free cracker options used to be pretty slim. My favorites were Blue Diamond Nut-Thins. Glutino also makes a ton of different cracker options, as do CrunchMaster and Mary’s Gone Crackers. However, all of these options are quite pricey, typically ranging from $4 to $7 a box.

Lately we’ve been seeing more mainstream companies offering gluten-free crackers at much lower prices ($2.50 to $3.50 a box). Some examples:

More Gluten-Free Convenience Foods Appearing in Stores

One of the things that I found most difficult about being diagnosed with Celiac disease was the extra work that had to go into grocery shopping, meal planning, and preparation. No longer could I grab a frozen pizza off the store shelf and serve it to my family for supper. Since then, more convenience options have come out, but they are usually pretty pricey.

However, last week I found… Read more…

Gluten-Free Pasta at Costco!

The Costco in Dartmouth Crossing is currently selling gluten-free pasta! The package I bought was around $6.99. It contains two 500 gram bags of Felicia pasta which is made in Italy by Molino Andriani. It’s a combination of rice, corn, and buckwheat. We’ll let you know how it is when we try it!

What Are You Having for Lunch?

I have always had a hard time finding something for lunches, and it’s even tougher now that I have Celiac disease. Although I work from home and therefore have more options than most people, it can still be hard to find something to fulfill that mid-day hunger.

To help you out, I thought that I would share some of the things that I am having for lunch this week!
